A'Chailleach is a fairly prominent hill in the view of the Monadhliath from Strathspey near Newtonmore, its east corrie being the most obvious feature. Beyond it to the north Carn Sgulain is almost hidden behind its slightly higher neighbour, and it is little more than a swelling at the northern end of the undulating plateau which extends several kilometres south-west to Carn Dearg.
The ascent of these two hills starts from the end of the public road in Glen Banchor 2 kilometres from Newtonmore. Go north up the track on the east side of the Allt a' Chaorainn for 2 kilometres, then climb north-west up the grassy slopes of A'Chailleach past a small bothy to reach the broad summit ridge ½ kilometre south-west of the summit. The large cairn is close to the edge of the east corrie. From it descend north, cross the Allt Cuil na Caillich and climb Carn Sgulain. Return to the Allt Cuil na Caillich and go down its south side with a steep descent to the flatter glen which is followed back to the end of the public road.
