On the Trail of Exploration in Shetland
VisitShetland has joined forces with the Shetland Field Studies Group, Shetland Islands Council and Shetland Enterprise, to produce a new guide showcasing the superb variety of walks to be enjoyed in Shetland.
With funding from Highland 2007 and Leader+, Walk Shetland 2007 markets Shetland as the walker's paradise it really is, and comprises The Shetland Walking Guide, a brochure detailing 15 walks with detailed maps and eye-catching images, a walking website, www.walkshetland.com, an outdoor summer event and a press trip planned for June.
VisitShetland's Marketing Executive, Misa Hay, said: "Although walking is the most popular leisure activity in Shetland, until now we've lacked adequate promotional material covering the sheer range of walks available, from easy to challenging. I am delighted that VisitShetland is part of this new initiative, which will assist both visiting and local walkers in the area and provide them with inspiring and accurate information on the routes available."
The summer event will celebrate Shetland's unique outdoor environment by tying in to walks promoted in the brochure. "Each walk will have a stamp available to collect for the route," continues Misa. "Once a walker has completed at least five walks and collected stamps for the particular walks in their 'walking passport', they can collect a voucher which can be redeemed for refreshments in selected cafes throughout Shetland."
The project leading up to the launch of Walk Shetland lasted six months, over which 15 walking routes were planned and surveyed. Many of the walks follow routes which have been improved with stiles and gates by Shetland Islands Council, with assistance from HIE Shetland and Scottish Natural Heritage.
Planning Implementation Officer Roger Tait, adds: "Shetland boasts an open landscape with remarkably easy access, superb scenery and the added thrill of plentiful archaeology and breathtaking wildlife."
