Dumgoyne Hill, Campsie Fells
Dumgoyne Hill provides a small but steep walk in the Campsie Fells, just north of Glasgow. The hill is a volcanic plug that offers some of the finest views across the rest of the Campsies and to Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps further north. With easy access by bus, direct from Glasgow, this walk makes for the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life!
The walk begins at the start of Campsie Dene Road, which heads off the main street in Blanefield. Follow this road for roughly 2kms where you will find that the road crosses two bridges. After crossing the first bridge, turn right off the road and through a gate to get access on to the hill.
Follow the winding track up the hill with the Craigbrock Wood on your left. The track then veers to the left, heading towards Dumgoyne. The path then levels for a short distance. From here you can enjoy the breathtaking views across the valley towards the Kilpatrick Hills.
The track then crosses a small burn, head straight across the burn and through a gap in the stone wall. The path will then take you across a stile. After crossing, carry on the track straight ahead of you. From here, the path gets a little rocky, continue along this path and follow it round the first hill. You should be travelling roughly in the direction of north-west.
This part of the walk should take you as far as to the base of Dumgoyne. From here you can begin the main climb. Start ascending the hill from this point, until you reach the main track. Turn right, and follow this main track all the way to the top. From here, you can sit back and take in the amazing views across to Ben Lomond, the Arrochar Alps and further southwest across the valley.
For the descent, you have two options; you can either take the steep path down off the front of the hill (ensure that only the sure-footed choose this route as it is quite a drop!) and make a loop of the walk. The other option is to head south off the side of the mountain until you reach one of the worn paths on your right. This path is a little crumbly and loose, so do take care! The track will then start to flatten out and continue towards another wall. Cross this wall via the double stile and head straight across the open field which willl be ahead of you.
On the other side of the field, there will be two trees which you should head straight for. On the other side of these two trees, you will come across an old road. Follow this old road downhill and you will find the Glengoyne Distillery on your left.
The final leg of this walk will take you back along the old road, heading southeast for roughly 4kms.
