Description
This is a short walk with a steep ascent to a viewpoint high over the town of Dunoon on the hill known as Dunan, which offers stunning views over Dunoon, the Holy Loch, the Firth of Clyde and the surrounding hills.
Start from the information board by the car park. Follow the well surfaced path through the woods to the enclosure. Cross the burn past the old hut site platform onto an unsurfaced path, bear right at the next junction to climb the path through the woods and turn right to ascend Dunan Hill. Descend from the summit past the path junction and continue downhill to join the track near Loch Loskin. Turn left on the track, then left into the woods, on a path which rejoins the outward route near the enclosure. Return to the car park.
Access Info
The walk starts at the car park just off the A885 road between Sandbank and Dunoon. To reach the car park follow the sign for Ardnadam Farm but at the first bend continue straight through a gate onto a track to reach the car park and picnic site.
Western Ferries (Clyde) Ltd operate a fast and frequent car and passenger ferry service from McInroy's Point at Gourock to Hunters Quay on the outskirts of Dunoon.
A leaflet on public transport throughout Argyll is available at Dunoon tourist information centre.
Additional Info
There are no facilities on the route but Sandback and Dunoon are both close at hand, with a selection of shops bars and restaurants. The Ardnadam enclosure is worth exploring as it has a series of signposts which mark the location of buildings which existed on the site, some of which are believed to have been established up to 5,000 years ago.
