Description

Ben More, Isle of Mull Ben More route map

The island of Mull's Ben More is a great big block of a mountain which commands respect. With a start at sea level this is one of the Munros where you climb the full height but the effort is certainly worthwhile. Many visitors go up and down by the direct route from the shores of Loch na Keal at Dhiseig which now has a path most of the way but a slightly longer route over the subsidiary top of A'Chioch gives a more entertaining outing.

For the A'Chioch route leave the car at Dhiseig and walk east along the road to the foot of the Abhainn na h-Uamha. Follow the southern bank up Gleann na Beinne Fada to reach a col. A'Chioch beckons to the south; it's ridge looks tougher than it actually is. From the summit of A'Chioch at 867 metres, the continuation to Ben More can appear problematic, especially on a mist-swirled day, but again there should be no difficulty - although there is a tricky little bit of rock as you leave the ridge and gain the summit of Ben More itself, which you should take care on.

From the summit, drink in the views of the Hebrides, Staffa, Ulva and Loch na Keal far below from the large stone-ringed shelter before descending by the north-west ridge. Further down, pick up a path by Abhainn Dhiseig (there are a few good pools along this stream to cool the feet!) to return to your transport.
