Crinan Canal Towpath

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
19.5 kms 6 hours 0 metres Explorer 358: Lochgilphead & Knapdale North

Description

Start on the towpath near the petrol station on the A816 Lochgilphead to Oban road. Follow the clear path alongside the canal to Cairnbaan - take care crossing the road by the bridge, as it is rather narrow. The next mile or so west from Cairnbaan to Dunardry is along a good vehicle track, but once the last house is reached this reverts to a footpath on the towpath. The rather graceful five span cast iron Islandadd Bridge dates from 1851. The view from the towpath here encompasses the broad sweep of the landscape from the sea and Moine Mhor to Dunadd hill fort.
