Circular Walk from Grantown on Spey

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
9.66 kms 3 hours 50 metres Explorer 419: Grantown-on-Spey & Hills of Cromdale

Description

This is an interesting walk on Speyside. A good family walk; no difficulties, no special footwear required.

The walk begins and ends at the new Spey bridge on the outskirts of Grantown. At first on broad paths through mixed woods it later meanders on narrower paths through open pine woods, grassy glades and later, birch woods. Lots of heather and blaeberries; and you might see any of buzzards, capercaillie, great spotted woodpecker, brown hare and roe deer. Also, the red squirrel still outnumbers the grey here. Part of the walk folows the Spey and in season salmon may be seen in the famous pools. There is no climbing involved.

Access Info

From the main street in Grantown follow any of the signs to the River Spey. You arrive at a roundabout at the bridge. Don't cross the bridge, but turn left (signposted Old Bridge, with a no through road sign) and follow it for only 10m to the car park on your left (035268). Local bus services between Inverness/Aviemore to Grantown.
