Description

Although in Glenmore forest, most of the walk is across open moorland dotted with old pines. The early section climbs gradually towards Cairngorm and Lairig Ghru, the latter providing a through pass to Braemar and Blair Atholl; there is then a gentle descent to Loch an Eilein (Loch of the Island). The walk around the loch offers splendid views, and there are several picturesque picnic sites.

Access Info

Coylumbridge is 2 miles from Aviemore, on the B970. The small roadside parking area is on your right shortly after passing the Coylumbridge Hotel complex. By train: Scotrail operate going north and south to Aviemore. By bus: Scottish Citylink operate north and south to Aviemore. There is a local bus service between Aviemore and Glenmore.

Additional Info

A small visitor centre at the lochside offers information about the area (and toilets). On the island are the remains of an old castle (6-700 years old) which provided a place of refuge for local people when raiding clans appeared.
