Description
Thomson designs are flavoured with styles from countries such as Egypt and Indian. But it was his taste for Grecian columns that led contemporaries to distinguish him from other Thomsons with the lasting nickname ?Greek?.
Exit Central Station turn right onto Union Street taking you past Thomson?s Egyptian Halls then along Argyle Street to the Buck?s Head Building. Then up Buchanan Street turning left onto Mitchell Lane past The Lighthouse, turn right onto Mitchell Street continue along West Nile Street and turn left onto St Vincent Street, walk along for about 1/2mile (800m) until the junction with Pitt Street, where you will see the ?Greek? Thomson St Vincent Street Church. Take a right onto Pitt Street which turns into Scott Street where on the right is Rennie Mackintosh?s Glasgow School of Art. From the front of Grecian Chamber turn left and head down Sauchiehall Street towards Charing Cross then take the pedestrian bridge over the motorways to Woodlands Road. Walk along Woodlands Road till it ends and turn right onto Park Road continue down this road and take a left at Great Western Road. Turn right onto Belmont Street then left at Quad Gardens and left again at Queen Margaret Drive. Cross the road and head down past the Botanic Gardens and turn right back onto Great Western Road. Cross the road again and walk along Great Western Road to Thomson?s Great Western Terrace. Trace your steps back to Byres Road, turn right then at junction with University Avenue and take a left. Then take a left onto Oakfield Avenue, pass Eton Terrace on the corner with Great George Street. Turn right onto George Street, right at Otago Street, left onto Gibson Street and continue when it becomes Eldon Street. Turn right onto Woodlands Road and return to Sauchiehall Street continue until the junction with Renfield Street take a right and continue until you reach Glasgow Central Station.
