Description
Dollar Glen extends deep into the northern scarp face of the Ochils. High up, below the strategically placed 15th century Castle Campbell (sometimes known as Castle Gloom), the Burn of Sorrow and the Burn of Care join to become Dollar Burn. Castle Campbell has one of the most imposing settings in Scotland
This strenuous walk offers a pleasing and dramatic circular tour. Start from the car park at the old quarry half way up the access road to Castle Campbell from Dollar. Cross the road and take the path downhill into the glen. A lookout point hints at the ferns, mosses and algae that flourish here.
Turn left at the bottom of the glen and follow the path downhill. Take the first turn on the right, over a footbridge and follow the well-made path steeply uphill on the west side of the glen. This continues to a footbridge below the castle. Cross the bridge and turn left, cross another bridge and up 'Jacob's Ladder'. Follow the path by the burn and back across a further bridge. Go through the wood to the viewpoint at Sochie Falls - worth a small detour - and back to the access road to the castle to return down the glen road to the car park. Return by the road.
Access Info
The walk starts at the old quarry car park half way up the Castle Campbell access road from Dollar. The paths are steep; take care particularly when it is wet. Good stout footwear is recommended.
Additional Info
The woodland in the glen shows signs of having been coppiced in past times to provide a constant supply of smaller timber possibly for charcoal burners or for local woodworkers to make domestic utnesils and furniture. Above Sochie Falls the woods are fenced off.
