Description

Although the walk is less than a mile long (1.5 kilometres), it does involve steep slopes and quite a number of steps. It also runs close to the top of the cliffs in places, so care must be taken.

Starting in Dunbar Harbour the path climbs steeply up towards the Leisure Centre. After passing in front of the Leisure Centre follow the signs for the 'John Muir Way', which will take you down the steps through the park, and continue following the path along the coast.

On a clear day there are fantastic views across the Firth of Forth, across to the Tyne Estuary, the Bass Rock and Fife. A great variety of geological features can be seen, starting with columnar basalt (like the Giant's Causeway) in the harbour, extinct volcanoes (the Bass Rock and the site of Dunbar Castle) and the cliffs themselves. The path offers a great vantage point for viewing birds on the many small coastal islands.

For the more energetic it is possible to continue down the steps at the end of the cliff top trail and follow the path around the edge of the golf course to Belhaven Bay, and on into John Muir Country Park.

By Car:- Dunbar is just over an hours drive from Edinburgh city centre. By Bus:- Buses take just over an hour and run every half hour. (Service X6 or X8). By Train:- Trains take 30 minutes from Edinburgh Waverley.
