Description
This route forms part of one of the British Horse Society's Tyne- Esk Horse Trails. The route can be extended through Rosewell to take in some of the built heritage by following the map.
From Rosslynlee car park follow the cycle-walkway west towards Roslin and Penicuik for about 3km until a sign that points right and up a flight of steps leading into Roslin Powdermills. Follow the path to the weir.
Roslin Glen is managed by Midlothian Ranger Service and a leaflet on the Glen can be downloaded from www.midlothian.gov.uk/tourism. Follow the path through the Glen past remains of old mill buildings - it is difficult to imagine that this beautiful wooded glen was a large industrial complex for over 150 years. Gunpowder was manufactured here to supply munitions in the Napoleonic, First World and Second World Wars.
Continue through the Glen until the metal gates at the road junction. Cross the road and continue on the pavement towards the entrance to Roslin Glen Country Park car park. As you climb up the hill toward the end of the walk, the mature woodlands on either side of the road, are part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the plants and trees. Coming out of the mature woodland cover, it is only a few hundred metres back to Rosslynlee car park.
