Description

Looking over to a couple walking on the sandy Traigh an Iar Beach Route map

This route doesn't follow a recognised path, nor is it waymarked. You will however be able to follow your own route clockwise from the car park indicated on the map. This leads to Traigh an Iar beach and the extended walk provides stunning views across to the Isle of Taransay and towards the North Harris Hills.

Start at the car park and walk back up the car park entry road to the main A859. From here walk for a short distance west until you cross a bridge then veer off onto grassy machair on the north side of the road as you make your way on to Traigh an Iar beach. Avoid the land on the south of the road as this is crofting land.

Walk along the beach and then head north, back up on to the headland and climb Macleod's Stone which provides fantastic views of the Isle of Taransay (made famous by the BBC's 'Castaways' programme) and over to the North Harris hills.

The walk continues over the machair heading back towards the A859 and the bridge across the Gil Meodal to return again to the car park. The walk can be extended by heading from the car park to Traigh Niosaboist.

Access Info

Follow the A859 to just east of Horgabost and Glen Horgabost, turning off this road as indicated on the map to reach the car park. If driving from Rodel turn left, if travelling from Tarbert turn right.

Additional Info

This is a great walk to do if you want to get away from it all. The beaches in this part of the world are famous for being pristine clean with clear green waters and pure white sands. Look out for wildlife when out on the walk including terns and other birdlife.

Walk of The Month

This is a wonderful bracing walk by a rugged stretch of the northern coast of Aberdeenshire.
