Description

The Dava Way

The Dava Way is a 23 mile trail across the ancient Celtic province of Morayshire linking the historic towns of Forres and Grantown-on-Spey. It is a great walking and cycling route. Almost all of the route follows the old Highland Railway line and is off road and safe from traffic. You climb from the Spey Valley to cross Dava Moor before descending to the Moray Firth; passing through a pleasing mix of farmland, woodland and moorland as you do so. The route benefits from the easy gradients provided by the railway engineers but the variety of scenery means that it avoids the tedium of many old railway routes.

This a recreational trail which has been set up and is maintained by a community group with most of the work carried out by volunteers supported by grants. The route is constantly been upgraded to improve drainage and the path surface. If linked with the Speyside Way and the Moray Coastal Trail it forms a unique long distance circular route of about 80 miles.

Access Info

The Dava Way can be walked or cycled in either direction. Many choose to start at Grantown as this reduces the height gained to 85 metres/280 feet and also provides fine views north across the Moray Firth to the hills in the far north of Scotland.

Forres and Grantown-on-Spey both lie on bus routes, whilst Forres also has a rail link. Public transport and parking information can be found on the Dava Way website.

Additional Info

The Dava Way is a relatively new route and as yet has no published guide. For extensive information about the route, the area, accommodation, etc visit the excellent Dava Way website at www.davaway.org.uk
