Achterneed Circular Walk
| Distance | Approximate Time | Height Gain | OS Map |
| 7 kms | 02:30 (hrs:mins) | 175 metres | Explorer 437, Landranger 20 and 26 |
Description
The paths vary from broad forestry tracks to ...none (two short sections of the walk have to be navigated without a path to follow; needs experience and maybe a compass). Off the main tracks the paths can be very boggy, so boots are advised. There is an interesting and scenic lochan about the halfway point, probably at one time offering good trout-fishing and duck-shooting.
Access Info
Parking is difficult at Achterneed. If you find a place make your way to the sawmill (NH485597).
If you have to park in Strathpeffer there's a car park in the centre of the village, at the Information Centre (NH483582); there are shops and refreshments there, too. It's a mile from there up to the sawmill.
Additional Info
Strathpeffer at the end of the 19th and early 20th Centuries was a widely known spa, drawing the rich and famous of the time to sample its waters, reputed to cure most ailments (the most drastic cure was a peat bath...)
Somewhat neglected since the last war, efforts are now being made to restore it as an attractive spa. No doubt the waters are beneficial to health... a good walk is too, and we've recorded several around Strathpeffer. Think of it... a good walk followed by a peat bath..!
