Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
9 kms 03:00 (hrs:mins) 350 metres Explorer 462: Orkney - Hoy, South Walls & Flotta

Description

This route follows the former public road from Moaness pier across the island to Rackwick Bay before climbing up hill and along the cliffs to look out over the Old Man itself. Please note that the distance given is for walking one way.

Access Info

Although there is more than one route to Hoy, the easiest access is via the ferry from Stromness to Moaness. The route can be started from here, or if travelling by car (or a local taxi) it can be shortened by driving to Rackwick.

Additional Info

At 137m (450 feet), the Old Man of Hoy is the UK's most famous sea stack, made all the more so through TV footage of some of the epic attempts to climb it.
