Herma Ness Circuit, Unst

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
7 kms 04:00 (hrs:mins) 240 metres Explorer 470: Shetland - Unst, Yell & Fetlar

Description

This, the furthest north walk in the British Isles, is a superb mix of moorland and coastal walking to the cliffs of Herma Ness with thousands of seabirds for company! There can be few, if any sections of Britain's coastline that are as spectacular as the Shetland coast with its cliffs, arches and an array of offshore sea stacks. The initial walk across the moor, where you are quite likely to be bombarded by the skuas, gives no indication of what is to come and the cliffs come upon you almost by surprise. The walk along the clifftops is enlivened by thousands of puffins and other seabirds and gannets can be watched fishing offshore or just sitting in the great colonies at Hermaness itself; (take your binoculars). The return over Hermaness hill gives good views over Muckle Flugga and its lighthouse - the Northern tip of Britain followed by more encounters with these Skuas!

Access Info

Unst is reached by two ferries from The Shetland mainland with a drive over the island of Yell in between. Once on Unst, follow the main road through Baltasound towards Haroldswick. Take the unclassified road on your left as you approach Haroldswick - signposted to Hermaness and Burrafirth.

Additional Info

Even if you don't have an interest in birdwatching, you can't fail to be impressed by the seabirds here so binoculars and a bird guide are useful. There is a good visitor centre at Burrafirth where you can find out more. During the nesting season you are quite likely to encounter swooping skuas, trying to chase you away from where they nest. Although they rarely make contact you may wish to consider taking a stick to hold above your head, which keeps them from coming too close. Alternatively you can just enjoy the experience of the close encounter with nature!
