Description

Looking over to the tiny hamlet of Spittal of Glenshee, Perthshire

The full route of the Cateran Trail is 96 km/60 miles long and, starting and finishing in Blairgowrie, provides access to some of the most beautiful parts of east Perthshire. It can be walked in one go or in several smaller stages and it follows old drove roads, ancient tracks and minor roads passing through farmland and forest.

The trail is named after marauding bands of cattle thieves who wreaked havoc in this area from the Middle Ages until the 17th century. Cateran raiding parties could number anything from 50 to 500 fierce warriors, who would prey on richer neighbours and rustle their cattle away in the dead of night using the network of trails in and around the hills and wild country of the area.

Access Info

The walk begins and ends in the east Perthshire town of Blairgowrie which is well served by regular bus services from Perth and Dundee. See the Traveline website to plan your journey and for further information.
