Description
Leave the small car park in the trees at the foot of Tulloch Hill (near Glackburn) and follow the track uphill to the Airlie Tower. This monument was erected in memory of the 9th Earl of Airlie who died at the battle of Diamond Hill during the Boer War. There is a brazier on top in which a fire is lit (one of a chain of fires up and down the country) when a new monarch is crowned.
Continue northwards along the ridge for three kilometres to just past The Goal to pick up a track leading southwards to Cotgibbon plantation where the glen road is rejoined and, after 2 kilometres, the car park is reached.
If you walk past the car park for 100 metres you will see a small cairn by the side of the road with a plaque commemorating the fact that Captain Scott of the Antarctic stayed in this glen for a year, planning and testing equipment, before his ill fated journey to the South Pole.
