Description
A distinctive natural feature rising out of the flat country around Loch Leven, Bishop Hill (1500ft/460m) offers good walking and lovely views of the loch and the natural basin of Kinross-shire. On a clear day the vista extends to the Ochil Hills, Fife and further south across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh and the Lothians. 'The Bishop', as it is affectionately known to locals, is most easily accessed from the car park at Holl Reservoir, off the A911 east of Scotlandwell. From here the track winds its way up through farmland and forestry plantings to emerge on the grassy open hill top. This is a perfect place for a leisurely picnic - feasting on the wonderful views of Loch Leven, with its islands and castle, far below. Retrace your steps to return to the start point.
Both the slopes and the plateau of Bishop Hill are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of their unimproved lime-rich grassland and cliff vegetation
For an alternative and longer return route head north east, across the hill top, to pick up a rough high level path running through Glen Vale. From here a circular route returns to Holl Reservoir on a grassy path, passing Harperleas Reservoir
Access Info
For access to the hill from Holl Reservoir, travel along the A911 at Scotlandwell for approx 5km before turning left onto a sign posted Scottish Water road. Car park at the road end near the reservoir. (GR 225034)
