The Cadger's Way, near Auchterarder

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
10 kms 02:30 (hrs:mins) 350 metres Landranger 58: Perth & Alloa

Description

This walk begins in Abbey Road, near to the centre of Auchterarder, and follows a minor country road across the A9 and then under the railway line before climbing upwards on a fairly steep gradient to reach Cloan, Upper Cloan and Coulshill.

The latter part of the route gives tremendous panoramic views north and westwards to the hills of Crieff and Loch Earn - so it's well worth pausing to look back. At Coulshill the right of way begins and follows a distinct track up through the Ochil Hills to the hill pass known as the Cadger's Yett. This spot is named after the travelling packmen (Cadgers) who regularly used the route to transport goods and cattle. 'Yett' is an old Scottish word for a 'gate'. This is the highest part of the path (1450ft/420 metres) and from here the route descends to Glen Devon, passing the delightfully situated Glen Devon Youth Hostel (SYHA). Return by the same route.

For a longer walk it is possible to continue walking through the Ochil Hills to reach Dollar Glen and Castle Campbell. This walk begins from Glendevon village and is indicated by a right of way sign near the river, just off the main road.
