Description
The Changue Forest Trail offers a rewarding hike up into the Polmaddie Hills. From the car park, follow the yellow waymarkers up the Howe of Laggan where there are excellent views over the Polmaddie Hill group. The route takes you through the heart of Changue, now a commercial forest with various tree species. There are good views north-east towards the well-known Nick of the Balloch mountain pass in the Galloway Hills.
On the way up the Howe of Laggan, there are excellent views over the countryside. In spring time, this part of the world really comes to life when the broadleaf trees, interspersed among the pines, burst into bud. Further on the path parts company with the Laggan Burn to veer north round Balloch Hill where you get a great view of the Nick of the Balloch. This pass became famous as a smugglers' route; the waters at its summit are known as 'the brandy well.' Continue on the forestry track heading east now under Larg Hill for an easy finish.
