Description
This route offers some of the finest woodland scenery in Scotland and is almost like one big nature trail with a myriad of different trees and wild flowers as well as red deer and wild goats.
Elongate Loch Trool lies in the heart of the Galloway Forest Park and makes for a perfect circular walk. The way-marked walk follows good paths which undulate around the loch shore.
Walking clockwise, pass Kenmure Moss to follow a road to the Bruce's Stone. This commemorates the life and achievements of King Robert the Bruce who launched his campaign to rid Scotland of English rule by these shores.
Enjoy the fine views up and down the loch which are exceptional with autumn colours at that time of year. Continue round the head of the loch by Glenhead Burn to follow the southern shore path, part of the Southern Upland Way (see the Southern Upland Way route page).
There are good views across to the Fell of Eschoncan and Buchan Hill framing Southern Scotland's highest hill, The Merrick - the key hill in 'The Range of the Awful Hand.'
