Description
This is a delightful country walk north of Gatehouse of Fleet around the Water of Fleet and early on the walk takes in Rusko Castle the 16th century restored tower house.
A hundred meters downstream it is still possible to make out the stepping-stones that postmen used before the bridge was built.
Continue along the road ahead until the sign for Carstramon Wood is straight ahead and take the right. The entrance to the wood will then be on your left hand side.
There is an interpretation board at the entrance which shows the various paths within. In order to do a short loop, bear left at the first waymarker then right at the next three. Continue downhill past the next waymarker which will return you to the start.
Roe deer are plentiful as are tree creepers, woodpeckers and other woodland birds. The woods are particularly beautiful in spring with masses of bluebells covering the ground.
