Description
Arran is a beautiful island and regarded by many as 'Scotland in Miniature,' with it's mountainous northern half and more gentle and rolling southerly half. An ascent of the highest peak on the Island is one of Scotland's best known walks and provides a magnificent vantage point of the Firth of Clyde and surrounding countryside. This route explores some of the highlights for experienced hill walkers.
After being dropped off the Brodick bus at Sannox, take the track from Sannox to the Allt a' Chapuill and follow the burn. Traverse north-west (at NS: 003440) to the steep shoulder of Cioch na h-Oighe and up through the boulders. The Cioch na h-Oighe ridge calls for a steady head and good scrambling skills.
Further on, the ridge widens to Mullach Buidhe before the path zigzags to the col below North Goatfell (818 m). From there, scramble along the Stacach ridge to reach Goatfell (874m).
Enjoy amazing views and head east (to NR: 997415) and follow the path south to reach the Cnocan Burn and Brodick Castle estate. Cross the road to hike happily over the sands to the Island's Capital, Brodick, where there are facilities and refreshments.
Access Info
Take the Calmac ferry from Ardrossan on the mainland to Brodick to meet the bus to Sannox in the north of the island.
