Around Wigtown

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
6.44 kms 01:30 (hrs:mins) 40 metres Explorer 311: Wigtown, Whithorn & the Machars

Description

This short walk from Wigtown, 'Scotland's National Book Town', in the Machars climbs gently via Lovers' Walk - with wonderful views across Wigtown Bay - and returns variously by minor road, old railway track and embanked path across saltflats, to the estuary of the River Bladnoch and thence back to Wigtown. En route it visits two birdwatching hides and two monuments to the Wigtown Martyrs. The scenery is dominated by Cairnsmore of Fleet (2,331ft) and its subsidiary hills and the evocative call of the curlew is likely to beguile the walker throughout.
