| 12 kms | 04:00 (hrs:mins) | 30 metres | Explorer 326: Ayr & Troon |
Description
A beach walk, which is best done at low tide, taking you from Central Ayr along the seafront, across the River Doon. Crossing the new footbridge, the walk continues along Greenan shore, past the ruins of Greenan Castle eventually to reach the magnificent headland that is known as the Heads of Ayr. The return route takes you along part of an old railway line, back down onto the shore at Greenan Castle, finishing back along the seafront to Seafield.
Please ensure that you check the tides prior to starting the walk, as many of the headlands on this route are impassable at high tide. Visit http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk to get more information about tide times.
Access Info
Free parking is available at the seafront just next to the Seafield roundabout. Ayr is also very well served by both buses and trains. Following signs in town towards the shore from either station would bring you to the South Beach promenade and the start.
Additional Info
This walk can be combined with the Alloway - Doonfoot - Greenan - Belleisle Park - Alloway route, which would produce a longer figure of eight walk from Alloway to the Heads of Ayr and back. Click the Walkingworld link below to find out more about this route.
