Description
This easy walk centres on the impressive, triangular, pink sandstone castle of Caerlaverock, in its deep moat amid outer earthworks and set on the coast of the Solway Firth.
The scenery on this walk by Solway's rugged coast is wonderfully varied as you pass through woods, across clifftops, over fields and along footpaths, with Galloway's celebrated dry-stone walls much in evidence throughout. From the beach car park at Brighouse Bay, the route takes a wooded path along the bay and past a holiday park, rounds the headland at Dunrod Point, strikes out across moorland and passes a golf course and SSSI along a lovely clifftop path. Then it turns inland on a path over attractive rolling farmland, with distant views of hills. Next the route passes by a wetland area, then takes a farm track through the farmyard and onto a minor road, which drops down with views over Brighouse Bay, back to the start. Two hundred yards away is Brighouse Bay Holiday Park with food shop etc.
Access Info
