An Ascent of Criffel

Description

Sweetheart Abbey in the village of New Abbey, near Criffel Criffel route map

If you like your hills short, sharp and steep and if you ever needed proof that you don't have to climb the biggest hills to get the best views, then this walk is for you. With an altitude of only 1800 feet, Criffel, by Dumfries-shire's gentle coastline is by no means the biggest hill around but it's isolated position rising ubruptly from the Dumfries & Galloway countryside gives wide views in all directions.

Although distant hills may catch the eye, the rolling farmland below and the beautiful shapes in the sands of the Nith estuary are what really make the view. While the walk is short in length it does involve more than 500 metres of climbing. From the small car park, go through a gate on the left to meet a track. After 100m, turn right to go up past a farm. Below are views of Loch Kindar, where Crannog dwellers once lived.

Keep straight ahead to walk through a forest, after which you emerge on the hillside. The summit path continues steeply over rough and boggy ground. On a good day you'll see the Lake District hills and the Isle of Man with the Solway Coast laid out below you.

Return by the outward route.
