Description
In any weather, Portpatrick is an invigorating place to start a walk. It's fitting that the long-distance trans-Scotland Southern Upland Way (212 mile/340 kilometre) starts here, which this walk follows for a way by the coast.
The scenery is fabulous with sheer cliffs and secluded, sandy bays along the way-marked path.
The warmer months see this stretch transformed into a riot of perfumed colour as sea thrift, spring quill and yellow rattle thrive on the cliff tops and on a good day you'll see Ireland.
The walk begins in the pretty coastal village of Portpatrick and heads north-west across moorland to reach Killantringan Lighthouse, near Black Head, following the Southern Upland Way trail and waymarkers. Down below the Lighthouse dangerous cross-currents are a skipper's nightmare; the wrecked container ship 'Craigantlet,' which ran aground in 1982, can be seen at low tide.
From the lighthouse follow the waymarked Southern Upland Way inland until the B738 and turn right, following the road back to Portpatrick.
